Ahhh - A Camping Shower

A camping shower is a must have luxury when you're out on the trail for days at a time. For some people the feeling of being dirty and not able to wash is enough to keep them from going camping ever. Well they don't need to worry about that anymore. Now you can wash up no matter how deep in the woods you go, no matter how far from civilization you get.

It used to be that the only way you would get clean is to use the showers at a family campground. Sure they work but you have to be up pretty early to be able to get any hot water and more than that, those places are usually a mess. I know that I can't stand walking around in somebody else's dirty soapy water and to be honest, I'm not convinced it isn't bad for your health at some level. Not to mention the lack of privacy and everything else that goes along with that.

Of course there's also the option of grabbing some biodegradable soap and just washing up in the nearest lake or river but that's not always practical either. If you're the type of person that likes to camp in the spring or fall when there's less of a bug problem then you can count on the water being very cold, maybe extremely cold even, and that could lead to anything from you becoming hypothermic to just catching a bit of a cold. Maybe nothing at all will happen to you but one thing is for sure, you can't beat the comfort of a camping shower.

They're actually nothing fancy and I'm surprised I haven't seen them around earlier than just the last few years. They're a plastic bag that's made of fairly thick plastic and tinted so that it's dark like a garbage bag. It has a spout on it and it will hold probably a couple of gallons of water. The spout on it can be turned on and off at will. The idea is that you fill it with water and hang it in a nearby tree or place it on a rock so it can be heated by the sun while you're doing your thing. Even on a cooler day the sun will heat the water to a much more enjoyable temperature than a nearby lake or river will offer you.

At some point in the day when you figure the water has been adequately heated you simply hang it up in a tree, wet yourself down, lather up, and then rinse it off. The best part is that if you figure one shower is not enough to get you clean then you can bring two with you. Heat them up at the same time and you should have more warm water than you need. They will roll up into a nice small little package that you can take with easily.

These days you simply don't need to feel dirty when you're camping. I'm aware that some people find it to be part of the charm but with a camping shower you can go anywhere anybody else wants to go and still keep clean.

A day out with friartuck Fishing and camping out. Had a great three days but I forgot to bring a back up battery for the camera hence why this is not a longer video. Had I brought backup battery this video would have contained footage of a rather inebriated young man trying to fillet a catfish that was suppose to weigh 12lbs but only weighed 6, a fish story we debunked. Then Grilling the fresh catfish over an open fire. A meal that was made up of dehydrated Chicken rattlesnake, potatoes, onions and many other veggies cooked in a Swedish mess kit using a Trangia. Great conversation and great company The first night there was steak cooked over hardwood coals a single malt scotch and good cigars in a place where they could be enjoyed to the fullest. I think I made a good friend and hope for another outing in the near future.

This is a review of the 2010 DD Travel Hammock. It Now comes with 2 zips (one either side of mosquito net) allowing quick entry / exit either side of the hammock and also allows you to tie the mosquito net up above you, out of the way, when not needed. As before, this hammock has fine mosquito netting which keeps out all insects (including the dreaded British midge). Entry is via one of two side zips each with two double-sided zippers. Features include two waterproof base layers so if needed (no trees) it can be set up on the ground as a basic bivi/tent, see pictures. The hammock also features two small internal pockets which are great for storing a torch, phone etc as well as three velcro patches between the two layers to help keep a thermarest/pad in place if cold weather camping. June 11th .....Along with 11 other hammock fanatics from hammockforums.net www.hammockforums.net we headed into the ever-so-green and piney woods on the North Country Trail in Chequamegon State Forest in Northern Wisconsin. We had three Hennessy hammocks, one DIY Bridge hammock , a Clark hammock and the rest were Warbonnet blackbirds. One was a tenter. Twelve people who had never met as a whole but we all know each other from the hammockforums postings so it seemed like camping with old friends. First night Thursday June 11 we all hiked in a short bit and made a "get aquainted" camp. We all arrived at different times and decided to all carry in extra goodies for a huge covered dish feast. Pasties, Venison dogs and bacon, Pork BBQ, the best slaw ever by Walking Bear, Thorwren's famous Stew, Fruit compote, brownies, Coffee Crisps and more. Stuffed thinking about it. In the morning we shuttled cars to the end of the trail (one hour) then back (one hour).... repacked into our lightest packs and off we all went for about a 9.9 mile hike to camp 2 on the Marengo River. Brilliant night and another member drove 7 hours to walk in and find us. We did not see him until morning. Dedication to the cause.... Saturday morning off for around a 10 mile hike. Started to thunder and rain and as we all spread out into groups that day we made camp in a campground to be near cars as some had to leave fairly early in the morn. Plenty of hammocks...... plenty of hammock gear .... a wee bit of ...

It was June 2004. We were camping on beach side forested land in India. The beach was sun kissed and not very far away, some friends had gone fishing. I lay in an hammock reading Great Expectations. The convict is shivering of cold and a little boy offers him food, which the former asked the latter to steal. The convict wonders how nice it would be to have a party only if he had warmer clothes. The shack close by has got a gas grill.

If you catch a fish, you have an option to use a charcoal grill or a gas grill. We had not decided which one to choose from after the boys returned with five large tuna fish, a fish which generally swims in areas closer to the Indian Ocean. We choose the charcoal grill. It retains the flavor a friend said who believed himself to a master chef. He could whip a seven course meal in ten minutes flat he said. Whatever the truth may be. We lit the charcoal. It resembled the fading sun. The fishes lay quiet now next to the fire, fresh out of water. Forgive us dear fishes for we must kill you to survive I remember reading in the old man and the sea.

Indian spices are among the best in the world. It was rare commodity five thousand years ago as well. The fish is cleaned up with a knife and marinated with all the spices. Finally, it is grilled. Apart from the fun you have in making your own food, deciding how to cook your fish can sometimes be quite the dilemma.I prefer charcoal grills because I think it is healthier than gas grills. Charcoal grilling helps preserve the spices. It adds to the texture of the food and give you an option to decide how much of cooking happens at various parts of the body. Gas grills are those boring indoor activities but not something you would want to do after you return from fishing, would you?

Copper is so widely used in the pipe industry that for the last 75 years, our water has traveled through a copper pipes. Why copper?

Some modern plumbing systems now use plastic, but copper pipes are still widely used for most water feeds and central heating pipe work. Copper is still the preferred piping material in the piping industry because of its exclusive properties.

For one, copper is comparatively safer than lead - it is nontoxic and does not harm water. Unlike iron, copper is also very resistant to rust. Aside from this, copper is fairly malleable and easier to transform.

Copper pipe sizes

The size of copper pipes depends on its use. Micro-bore central heating systems usually use 8 and 10 mm copper pipes. Bigger copper pipes (about 12 and 15 mm) are normally used for connecting to separate taps, appliances and other similar uses. Even bigger copper pipes (22, 28 and 35 mm) are used for projects that require long runs - ones that 15 mm copper pipes cannot handle without dropping pressure.

Copper pipes are available in a range of lengths. Bigger trade outlets usually sell copper pipes of three to four meter lengths, but smaller hardware stores and do-it-yourself shops carry copper pipe lengths as short as one and a half to two meters.

Some notes about copper pipe sizes

Some countries (such as the United Kingdom) use the 'imperial' sizing system, meaning, the inner diameter of the pipe is measured. In the United States, copper pipes are measured based on their outer diameter. As a general rule, a 0.5 inch copper pipe (measured using the imperial system) is the same as the 15mm copper pipe measured using the metric system).

Cold Steel's Recon Scout Bowie Knife has been in their lineup for well over 10 years. It has proven itself to be one of the toughest, sharpest and most dependable knives that they make.

Within the past couple of years, Cold Steel has given the Recon Scout somewhat of a makeover. It was traditionally made with a single piece of high carbon steel. They are making it nowadays with three layers of laminated steel called VG-1 San Mai III.

These are my thoughts on the Cold Steel Recon Scout:

What I like about the knife:

1. At 15 ounces, the Recon Scout is sturdy enough to be your hunting, camping or survival companion. It is light enough to be easily concealed or carried.

2. One of Cold Steel's most famous knives is called the Trail Master. This is perhaps one of the most popular bowie knives in the world. The Recon Scout is designed after the Trail Master but scaled down to a slightly smaller size.

3. With san mai steel, the inner cutting edge is VG-1, which is known for its edge retention and strength. The downfall of VG-1 is that it can be somewhat brittle. That is exactly why Cold Steel put a layer of softer 400 series stainless on each side.

The combination of steels gives the knife a wonderful compromise between edge holding ability and flexibility.

4. The knife has a convexed edge, which is sharp enough to make extremely precise cuts, but thick enough to be used to hacking or chopping without ruining the blade.

What I didn't like about the knife:

1. The cordura sheath leaves something to be desired with such an expensive knife. At a suggested retail value of $375, I would expect a more rugged sheath.

Overall:

Cold Steel's Recon Scout is probably my favorite knife that they make.

It has all of the best features of their enormously popular Trail Master but is scaled down to be the ULTIMATE hunting, outdoor or utility fixed blade knife.

Well worth the asking price. I was impressed by the quality of the rig right out of the box. The wood slats appear to be very solid with zero warping and a nice smooth finish. The packaging was perfectly simple, honestly I don't see why any elaborate padding would ever be necessary. I opened up one end of the box, slid it out onto the lawn. I was then able to roll out the hammock between the two trees I had in mind (completely tangle-free), set up the eyebolts (included), hook each end, then adjust the stretch to exactly where I wanted it (a fair amount of chain is included for adjustment). Ridiculously simple and easy.

The hammock itself is amazingly comfortable in no small part due to the DuraCord material. I couldn't tell it was synthetic. It feels just like cotton or similar natural fiber. Against skin it doesn't chafe or otherwise irritate, it's actually very soft, imo.

I can't comment on its durability since I've only had it up for a month, but it is used a couple times on weekends, although not so much on weekdays. The better half likes to curl up and read in it and is perfectly content to spend a fair chunk of time just relaxing.

Excellent value for less than 0! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this versus the cheaper and less expensive hammocks out there. I really feel like I did get what I paid for.
